Michael Mann, the 83-year-old director behind ‘Heat’, ‘Collateral’ and ‘The Insider’, was taken to a hospital on Saturday after reportedly shooting himself in the leg by accident at a Los Angeles gun range, according to TMZ.

According to the report, the gun went off while Mann was putting it back in its holster. His condition hasn’t been made public, and neither Mann nor his representatives have commented so far.

Mann has spent five decades building a reputation for some of cinema’s most precise and realistic gunfights, and the downtown shootout in ‘Heat’ is still studied by filmmakers today. His most recent feature, ‘Ferrari’, starring Adam Driver, premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2023. He has also long been developing a film of ‘Heat 2’, the novel he co-wrote with Meg Gardiner.

We’re wishing him a full and fast recovery.
